The E Ke Words
The e ke words are spelling patterns that often have a long e sound at the end of a base word. Grouping these spellings together helps students to remember the difference between them.

E-acute
Acute accent (
The accent is most frequently used in French, but it can also be found in words from other European languages (e.g., nee, resume, fiancee and coupe). In some African and Athabaskan languages, it marks a high tone, e.g., Yoruba apa ‘arm’, Nobiin fenti’sweet date’, Navajo t’aa ‘boat’).
It is often omitted in monosyllabic words. In some cases, the acute accent may be used to distinguish the same word in different stress patterns: arme(e)n vs. een, and ide vs. ode.
E-silent
The silent E has a lot of jobs, but it’s mostly known for making a vowel say its name. Silent E can also soften or harden consonants and syllables in words, and it can cause a word to end with a syllable of its own (ridge, hodge-podge).
Another job for silent E is helping the consonant digraph TH to make the voiced or unvoiced sound. Silent e helps the TH in words like bathe and thumb to become the softer /th/ sound, while it makes a syllable of its name in words like advocate and loathe.
In a small number of cases, silent e converts a short vowel into its long equivalent as part of the Great Vowel Shift. This change is noticeable in the words moos-moose, teas-tease, and tens-tens.
